Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is undoubtedly the best place to stay when gorilla trekking in Uganda. The 10 luxury tents are nestled into the forest just inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to more than half of the last remaining mountain gorillas on Earth. Most of the gorilla troops here have been habituated to humans after years of exposure. Each day a maximum of eight visitors is permitted to spend one hour with each group. Locating them often involves a strenuous hike into the mountains, but local porters are available to carry your gear. In addition to gorillas, the national park is home to forest elephants, hogs, chimpanzees, and a variety of monkeys. Day trips to Queen Elizabeth National Park for a savannah safari are also available.
Rooms at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp are decorated in a contemporary African style with natural tones and local art and textiles. They all have a large en suite bath with a deep soaking tub to unwind in after a day of trekking. Communal areas include a well-stocked bar and dining room that serves fresh local cuisine. Guests can end each day sharing stories and drinks around the campfire under the bright Ugandan stars.
