Ngaga Camp was originally founded and still operates as a center for western lowland gorilla research in the Congo Basin. It now accepts guests and has evolved into a creative partnership between tourism and conservation. The camp is located in the dense rainforests on the western boundary of Odzala-Kokoua National Park, inside the home range of over a dozen groups of gorillas. Small groups of up to four guests from the lodge are led by experienced guides to look for the three troops that are habituated to humans. Be advised that medical checks and masking are required to go on a gorilla trek to ensure the health of the animals. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the chances are constantly improving. The on-site research team visits the gorillas daily and accumulated understanding of the forest informs the camps’ approach to habituation and conservation.
The six double chalets that make Ngaga Camp stand on tall stilts are built with locally woven palm panels and feel native to the place. Each has an en suite bath with hot water, power, and fans. The large lounge, bar, and dining area look out over the towering forest that surrounds the camp. The main building includes a large star deck with a fire pit for sundowners. It’s a comfortable base for one of Africa’s most interesting eco-tourism projects.
