Liwonde National Park lies south of Lake Malawi on the banks of the Shire River, a large tributary of the Zambezi. It is one of the most popular safari destinations in Malawi due to its location between the capital city of Lilongwe and the commercial capital of Blantyre. However, popularity is relative, and, compared to other destinations, you will likely see few other tourists in the park’s 135,000 acres. Here you can safari by boat to see hippos, crocodiles, and elephants along the riverfront. More traditional game drives and walking safaris venture inland for sightings of lion, cheetah, rhino, and a variety of antelope.
Kuthengo Camp is a small safari camp located in the northern part of the park among stout baobabs and wispy fever trees. The four modern tents that make up Kuthengo are simple yet comfortable and include bathtubs and outdoor showers. There is even a small plunge pool to cool off in during the hotter months. The camp is the ideal place to find solitude in this magnificent yet lesser-known wilderness.
