&Beyond Phinda is 73,000 acres of private game viewing in the Lebombo foothills of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region. The reserve contains six different lodges with distinct personalities. Phinda Mountain Lodge is one of the best places in South Africa for a family safari. Phinda is a low-risk malaria area and Mountain Lodge includes three family cottages, a family suite, and a children’s lounge with WildChild activity program. Families will not be getting a light version of safari, however. Close-up sightings of elephant, lion, cheetah and other plains game are almost guaranteed. The reserve also hosts an impressive rhino relocation program because of the success of the species here. Beyond game drives, activities include walking safaris, photo safaris, expeditions to nearby Maputaland beaches, and even scuba diving.
Mountain Lodge is dotted with large glass windows and viewing decks for expansive views of the hills. The main area includes a restaurant, complete with a pizza oven for the kids, a lounge, a bar, and an infinity pool. All rooms include outdoor showers and private plunge pools. Nearby Phinda Rock Lodge offers dramatic views for couples looking for a more intimate Phinda experience. Children under 12 are unfortunately not allowed at Rock Lodge because of its precipitous cliffs.
