Malawi is a relative newcomer for international travelers compared to its neighbors, Zambia and Tanzania, but tourism is now developing in some of the most unique landscapes in East Africa. The country is dominated by the crystalline waters of Lake Malawi, Africa's third-largest lake. The beguiling hills and light of the Nyika Plateau are a dream for hikers and bikers, and newly rewilded Parks like Liwonde and Majete can now offer high-caliber tented safari experiences. There are no five-star properties in Malawi as of yet, but there is plenty of experiential luxury to be had here.
Go for an up-and-coming safari destination at a lower price point than its heavyweight neighbors — and cap the trip on the beaches of Lake Malawi.

Visa — required; apply online and print it. US passport holders need a visa — a single-entry tourist visa is US$50 for stays up to 3 months. Apply in advance for the eVisa on Malawi’s immigration site and print your approval: some airlines check for it before boarding, and the eVisa site can be unreliable, so don’t leave it to the last minute. You can also pay on arrival in US dollars — but bills must be dated 2017 or newer, and neither credit cards nor Malawian kwacha are accepted.
Passport. Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with 1 blank page per entry stamp.
Vaccinations. A yellow-fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from certain countries in Africa or South America, with the vaccine given at least 10 days before arrival.
Currency — declare it. There’s no limit on what you bring in, but you must declare all foreign currency on arrival; up to US$5,000 may be taken out. Malawi enforces this strictly and inconsistently — travelers have been detained for failing to declare — so keep your declaration form and document what you carry.
Good to know. Cannabis and CBD in any form are illegal (arrest, detention, fines up to $500), as are firearms and ammunition. Overstaying your visa costs $25 per day, payable in US dollars at the airport before you leave.
