Tucked into a valley in the saguaro-studded Bradshaw Mountains one hour north of Phoenix, is Castle Hot Springs. Native peoples were drawn to these healing waters for millennia, and in the 19th century it was developed into a resort for city dwellers to convalesce. After a drive down a long winding dirt road through the Sonoran Desert, you are greeted by the canary yellow paint of two of the remaining historical buildings. We recommend a stay in the cottage for the most authentic experience. The other rooms have a contemporary style that is somewhat out of place, but they are all supremely comfortable. Warm water from the springs can even be piped into a private in-room bath.
The mineral-rich hot springs are the highlight of a stay here. You can spend hours soaking in the hot water staring up at the century-old palm trees. The water flows down through a series of pools of different temperatures to meet your preference. With the recent addition of miles of hiking trails and a via ferrata climbing course to compliment the relaxing springs, Castle Hot Springs has blossomed into a fantastic outdoor destination. Horseback riding tours of nearby canyons are also available. The resort’s organic farm grows an array of produce for the restaurant, which is cooked to perfection. Rates include three meals per day and all gratuities, so you can relax and enjoy the desert environment. Be advised that the resort is closed during the hottest summer months.
