Isla Espiritu Santo, a desert island in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, is one of North America’s most spectacular wildlife destinations. Its tall cliffs are dotted with towering cacti and a variety of birds, while the surrounding turquoise waters teem with marine life, including whales, whale sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays. The island is a protected national park and UNSECO World Heritage Site, so no permanent structures are allowed. The best (and only) place to stay here is Camp Cecil de la Isla.
The ten mobile domed tents that make up the camp are comfortable, large enough to fit a king bed, and even include turndown service. Shared bathrooms are minimal but sustainable with composting toilets and solar-heated showers. Delicious meals and happy hours are prepared on-site daily for guests, and kayaks, paddleboards, and trained naturalist guides are also available. Spend your days swimming with sea lions, seeking out blue-footed boobies, hiking to cave art, or simply enjoying a margarita on the beach. It’s a fabulously adventurous and natural take on the traditional Baja beach escape.
