Botswana safari

Botswana

Best time · May – Nov

Botswana's Okavango Delta is completely unique — a vast inland delta teeming with elephant. It can be seasonally dry in places, and navigating the channels to find wildlife is sometimes harder than cruising by boat in Zambia. But Botswana has focused squarely on high-end tourism, so its camps sit a notch above Zambia's in luxury.

Warmest around Oct (daily highs near 36°C / 97°F); coolest around Jun (25°C / 77°F); wettest in Jan (~192 mm); driest in Apr–Oct. Based on 2021–2025 averages at Okavango Delta.

Zambia

Best time · May – Nov

Zambia and Botswana offer a similar range of experiences with a different emphasis, and both give easy access to Victoria Falls. Zambia is the home of the walking safari — South Luangwa is the only place in Africa you can do camp-to-camp walking safaris, in small bush camps of fewer than six tents that reward lovers of true wilderness. Lower Zambezi adds year-round water safaris with herds of elephant along the riverfront, and Zambia is generally more affordable than Botswana.

Warmest around Oct and Nov (daily highs near 37°C / 99°F); coolest around Jan (29°C / 84°F); wettest in Jan (~279 mm); driest in May–Oct. Based on 2021–2025 averages at South Luangwa.
