Cape Town, a big-five safari, and a romantic tropical island finale.
The diversity of South Africa, makes it the world's best honeymoon destination. This is the classic routing. Begin in Cape Town for hiking, penguins, and an unbeatable culinary scene. Then fly to a private Greater Kruger reserve for big five game drives and unhurried afternoons. Finish barefoot in Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago, where dhows drift over turquoise water teeming with fish.

Where the mountains meet the sea. Cape Town pairs Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the Camps Bay coastline with world-class dining and the Cape Winelands on its doorstep — a refined, romantic bookend to any Southern Africa honeymoon.

The Timbavati lies north of the Sabi Sand in the central-western Greater Kruger — drier, more open country of marula and mopane woodland, sandy riverbeds and mixed bushveld, with a wilder, less-travelled feel. It delivers the Big Five alongside big breeding herds of elephant and buffalo and strong lion prides, and it is the home of the legendary white lions whose bloodline still surfaces here. Open vehicles track across the sandveld, and the quieter traversing areas make for an unhurried, old-Africa wilderness experience.

Africa's busiest hub and the natural overnight pivot between a southern-African safari and the Indian Ocean islands. A night near O.R. Tambo takes the strain out of the long connections — a comfortable airport hotel, a proper dinner and an early onward flight — so you reach the bush or the beach rested rather than frazzled. Not a destination in its own right, but the join that makes an ambitious multi-country journey run smoothly.
4 nights

A barefoot-luxury island finale in the Indian Ocean. The Bazaruto Archipelago's turquoise shallows, dhow sailing, world-class snorkelling and castaway sandbanks make it the perfect place to unwind after the bush.
Visa — not required. US passport holders don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days. You do, however, now need to complete South Africa’s online customs/traveller declaration before you arrive.
Passport. Valid for at least 30 days beyond your planned departure from South Africa, with 2 consecutive completely blank visa pages per entry (endorsement pages don’t count).
Vaccinations. A yellow-fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from a country the WHO designates as a risk — and the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before arrival.
Currency. You may bring in or take out up to ZAR 25,000, plus unlimited foreign currency if you declare it on arrival. Krugerrand coins can’t be brought in; up to 15 may be taken out with proof they were purchased in foreign currency.
Good to know. Crime is high — stay alert, especially in cities. Traffic drives on the left, and the roads are more dangerous than in the US. On safari, follow your guide’s instructions — the animals are wild, not tame. And expect occasional scheduled power cuts (“load shedding”).

Visa / eTA — apply before you travel. For a stay of 90 days or less in a hotel or vacation rental, US passport holders need an electronic travel authorization (eTA), obtained in advance with proof of your reservation. (If you’re staying instead in the private home of family or friends, you’ll need a full visitor visa, applied for before travel.)
Passport. Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with 2 empty visa pages (endorsement pages don’t count).
Vaccinations. A yellow-fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from certain countries in Africa or South America; if you need one and arrive without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport health clinic.
Currency. Up to 10,000 Mozambican meticais (about US$150) may be brought in or taken out.
Good to know. Always carry your passport (with your visa/eTA) or a notarized copy — police sometimes stop travelers and solicit bribes, especially from those without it. The US Embassy advises against paying bribes.
