May – December 2025 | $10,000 budget

Congrats on your engagement! My first safari was on my honeymoon, so I’m excited for y’all. Since you’re flexible, I’ve included a few options below. I’ve requested pricing and availability on a couple of options and should have something soon. This will include all of your air and car transfers. Based on your feedback, we can refine the trip until it’s perfect.

I’ve conceived of these options as “bush to beach” itineraries that combine a safari with a beach resort. It gives you a good mix of activities for your honeymoon and also reduces the cost of a longer trip because beach stops are more affordable.

Also, May is the rainy season in Kenya and Tanzania, but early June and late October are great times to visit for shoulder season rates. July-September is good weather and the high season. If you want to travel in May, I would suggest South Africa, because May is the dry season there.

Kenya

Kenya is my favorite option for getting the best mix of wildlife and culture for your budget. The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s ultimate wildlife experience, and you also have Maasai guides that give you a taste of the culture. There are a couple of lodges I would suggest:

After your safari, fly to Lamu on the Kenyan coast. This is a really authentic and under-the-radar beach destination. Lamu town has an interesting culture, and I would book Manda Bay on the tip of the island for some romantic seclusion.

Manda Bay Resort

Tanzania

Nomad Sand River

I like Tanzania, but the Serengeti can feel very crowded unless you pay for very high-end lodges. If you want to go, the southern part of the country has great wildlife and fewer tourists. The only downside is that there isn’t Maasai culture here. Nomad Sand River is a good option here, and one differentiator is that there are boat safaris. From there, you can end your trip to Zanzibar at a resort like Shooting Star.

South Africa

I’ve added South Africa as an option because the weather is good in May, and you can get a really good bang for your buck on safari year round. The Greater Kruger National Park area has some of the best wildlife viewing on earth. Here, I like Simbavati, because it has a great location in a private reserve.

There are many different beach options in South Africa, but popular options are Mauritius, Mozambique, or the Kwa Zulu Natal Wild Coast. I can show you more if you are interested in South Africa.
