Chan Chich Lodge is likely the best place to view wildlife in Central America. The lodge is built around a former Mayan village of the same name, which is now located within a 30,000-acre forest reserve. The reserve is surrounded by another half million acres of conservation land that spans into Guatemala. It protects species like jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, and a wide variety of birds. It’s the best place to see a jaguar in the wild outside of Brazil. The lodge has created an extensive trail system to explore the large reserve. Animals are best seen at night on guided walks and game drives, but guests can also do self-guided hikes and horseback rides. These trails also access the Mayan ruins on the property, and tours of other important sites such as the ATM Cave, Tikal, and Lamanai can be arranged.
The lodge was created with a conservation ethos. Most of the fruit, vegetables, and meat served at the restaurant are produced locally on Chan Chich’s 3,000-acre organic farm. The 13 thatched guest cottages are also energy efficient, built of local materials, and reflect the hotel’s Mayan history. The sounds of birds and howler monkeys will greet you in the morning here, and you can end the day dining on the verandah or soaking in the hot tub. It’s both a laid-back luxury hotel and a remote naturalist’s paradise.
