Pench National Park in central Madhya Pradesh is one of India’s best-kept wildlife secrets. The park’s rolling teak forests and grasslands are home to the highest density of herbivores in India and healthy populations of tigers and leopards. This is the landscape that inspired The Jungle Book. Jamtara Wilderness Camp is a luxury safari camp located near a small village along the park’s buffer zone. It’s the only camp in the area, and the setting around a giant banyan tree has an air of serenity to it. Wildlife is often seen near the guest tents. Each luxury tent has a private patio, forest views, and sustainably stylish reclaimed decor. Wood from the decks of ships, writing desks from the Supreme Court of India, and art deco furniture used by Embassies in Delhi are all used to furnish the camp.
Days at Jamtara can be spent on guided nature walks in the buffer zone, bike rides to the village, or tiger safaris in the park. One of our favorite experiences is the star bed, done on tall stilts in the style of a traditional farmer’s watchtower. The forest comes alive at night, and sleeping out among it electrifies the senses.
