Azura Benguerra Island is located on a tranquil stretch of beach with shockingly blue water inside the Bazaruto Marine National Park in Mozambique. It is the first luxury eco-resort in the country and was built by and is now operated in partnership with the local community. Fish caught by local fishermen are served fresh daily in the restaurant and other residents work as butlers, chefs, or scuba instructors. The 20 villas all have ocean views and private plunge pools, perfect for an afternoon relaxing between ocean excursions. The archipelago is home to multitudes of tropical fish, turtles, humpback whales (from July-October), and even the endangered dugong. A day on the water at Azura includes a hike up the massive Bazaruto dune, snorkeling or diving at Two Mile Reef, and lunch on a deserted beach. Other activities include horseback riding and sunset dhow cruises. The helicopter ride to and from Vilanculos on the mainland has the most stunning views of the crystal clear water and is likely to be the highlight of any trip.
Regular flights between Vilanculos, Mozambique, and Kruger Mpumalanga Airport in South Africa, make Benguerra Island a romantic and refreshing finish to a South African safari.
