Kenya

Best time · Jan, Feb, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov

Kenya and Tanzania offer similar experiences, so we usually recommend picking one or the other. Kenya is more accessible by air via Nairobi, has better infrastructure, and is slightly more affordable. Northern Kenya adds real variety too — the Samburu National Reserve and the Laikipia plateau, which has some of the best rhino viewing in Africa.

Warmest around Mar and Oct (daily highs near 31°C / 88°F); coolest around May (27°C / 81°F); wettest in Apr (~135 mm); driest in Jun–Oct. Based on 2021–2025 averages at Masai Mara.

Tanzania

Best time · Jan, Feb, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov

Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara share one ecosystem, but the Serengeti is roughly ten times the size of the Mara — so the Great Migration herds spend most of the year in Tanzania. Tanzania also has unique chimpanzee-trekking lodges and walking-safari camps in the south, away from the standard circuit.

Warmest around Sep and Oct (daily highs near 32°C / 90°F); coolest around Jan (28°C / 82°F); wettest in Apr and Dec (~119 mm); driest in Jun and Jul. Based on 2021–2025 averages at Serengeti.
