The Republic of Congo–or simply Congo for short–is home to the world’s second-largest rainforest, the Congo Basin. The dense jungle is rarely visited by tourists, but it is home to large herds of forest elephants and troops of lowland gorillas. Accommodation here isn’t luxury, but the people and wildlife are fantastic. Congo is often confused with its more troubled neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but Congo is rated just as safe as travel to as South Africa by the State Department.
