Shumba Camp is located on an island in the Busanga Plans, a vast grassland entwined with waterways in the remote north of Kafue National Park in Zambia. During the rainy season, the plains are flooded, but a visit from June to October reveals a drier environment similar to the Serengeti. Large herds of antelope and other plains game forage in the grasses and are hunted by predators, including lions. Because of this abundance of prey and a position at the nexus of numerous pride territories, Shumba is one of the best places to view lions in Africa. The big cats are often found near or even in the camp (see photo gallery). Six luxury safari tents on raised platforms comprise the camp, and views of the vast flood plain can be enjoyed from their decks or the pool. In addition to game drives, boat safaris are available when the water is high. Kafue National Park also is the only place in Zambia where you can take a balloon safari.
Shumba’s relationship with Kafue is a great example of the power of tourism in conservation. Before the arrival of Wilderness Safaris, poaching was a significant problem in the park. However, through the financial and logistical support of the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife, Kafue is returning to its former glory.
