It feels like just yesterday that I was posting about where to go in 2024! Fortunately, I was able to visit two of my top picks from that list in the past year, Zambia and New Mexico. They were both unforgettable trips into the wild, so I’ve created another list to inspire further travels in 2025. This year, I’m looking further off the beaten path and new takes on popular destinations. Cheers to a new year of travel!
The Republic of Congo, also known as Congo, is often confused with its troubled neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but the countries couldn’t be more different. Congo is very safe and has opened Odzala-Kokoua National Park, a vast and untouched stretch of the Congo Basin, to travelers. Now is the time to visit before the secret gets out. At these remote camps, you’ll have private encounters with lowland gorilla troops and see chimpanzees and other elusive creatures like the forest elephant. It’s a rainforest adventure, unlike anything you’ve ever experienced! Read our Congo itinerary…
I’m used to hopping between destinations while I’m in Africa, but there is something to be said for staying longer in one place. You form better memories and deeper connections with the landscape you’re immersed in. It also makes it ok to skip a game drive and spend the morning by the pool. This style of travel fits large multi-generational groups better than anyone else, and safari villas are the perfect places to settle in with your family. In 2025, I’m looking forward to taking my kids on safari and getting to know a place. Read my list of the best safari villas in Africa…
You may not know that we book cruises! We shy away from bigger boats but love smaller, adventurous ships. They are often the best way to see a remote destination. I’ve been planning trips to see the Northern Lights by boat in Norway this winter. Ships can steer around bad weather, ensuring clear skies for the best viewing. In summer, more of the Arctic opens up, and visitors can see a spectacular array of wildlife in the Northern Arctic, including polar bears, whales, and a plethora of birds. Japan is one of my favorite destinations—the food, culture, and onsen are unbeatable. However, following the pandemic, the country has been overwhelmed by tourists, making travel difficult during peak season. We’re looking outside the island of Honshu to more remote parts of this beautiful country, and the northernmost island of Hokkaido looks fantastic for summer. The latitude makes for milder weather than the south, and there are historic onsen, stunning gardens, and miles of hiking trails to please any outdoor enthusiast. Another victim of the post-pandemic rush is Europe. July and August are almost unbearably busy and hot, so I try to steer clients away from this time of year. However, there are still good ways to see this perennial favorite. May, September, and October are still pleasant enough to swim, and most of the summer crowds have gone home. I’ve had clients in both Italy and Greece during shoulder season, and I can’t wait to book more. I’m particularly excited about a trip we just planned to walk the West Highland Way in Scotland. Cabo San Lucas is associated with large resorts and hordes of partiers, but once you leave the city, you’ll find a quieter side of Baja. The town of Todos Santos and nearby La Paz are charming places to relax on the water, and wildlife options abound. The Gulf of California has a healthy population of whale sharks, and in season, it is an excellent place to spot blue whales. On the Pacific side, Magdalena Bay has one of the world’s best whale-watching experiences, where gray whale mothers bring their calves to be scratched by friendly tourists in boats. One of the most enviable trips we booked this year was to Explora El Chalten in Argentinian Patagonia. Clients spend four days exploring cultural sights in Buenos Aires before taking the long flight south to El Califate and then caught the shuttle to the town of El Chalten. Explora Hotels are known for world-class service, and the hiking here is unparalleled. It is definitely a bucket list trip for anyone who loves the outdoors.
